Description

Come and join us on Wednesday evenings 6:30pm til 9pm.  This is a leisure class for all levels and the term is 10 weeks with one week break for half term.

As a beginner, you should bring a small project such as a dining chair, loose seats, a footstool or a small nursing chair.  But send a photo of your project to the tutor and she’ll confirm it’s doable and suitable for you.  Depending on your project, you’ll start to learn the basics and get to grips with some of the tools such as the tack hammer, the pneumatic staple gun, the web stretcher etc, learn about fabrics and how to handle the materials that we use.

Classes are designed to give you loads of tips and techniques used in the trade and to enhance your understanding and appreciation of this huge craft. You’ll be exposed to a range of projects with some students working on more advanced projects and this can give you a little insight into other skills and processes.

As you progress, the tutor will guide you with choosing subsequent projects.  To avoid disappointment, everyone sends a photo of their proposed project to me before the course starts.  Please email saramac@upholsterybureau.com

There is lots of 1:1 instruction and demonstration as well as some group learning for different topics.

Do check out the FAQs page for lots of answers about all kinds of things.

**Please note, fees include storage for all beginner size projects.  Armchairs (including tub chairs, loungers, ottomans, large footstools and some nursing chairs) will be charged £65 per term or £32.50 for half a term and extra large chairs (depth and width are both over 73cm) £120 per term.  This fee is paid at your first session, by card.**  If you are unsure if you will be charged a storage fee, please ask the tutor.

The classes include:

  • instruction for complete or partial ripping out and reupholstery
  • Or carrying out a recover (only removing and then replacing the top fabric)
  • Traditional & modern upholstery techniques applied to domestic furniture, tools and materials and how we handle them
  • Guidance to help you choose and find an appropriate fabric for your project
  • Simple wood cleaning and reviving techniques and small project repairs
  • Choosing upholstery fabrics and trimmings, making piping and double piping
  • More experienced students will measure and draw up cutting plans
  • Other topics for discussion are chair or fabric designers, chairs in history, developments in sustainability/aspects of the upholstery trade
  • Email me a photo of your project prior to the course at saramac@upholsterybureau.com and check out the FAQs page for guidance and advice.   Please email me if you think you need advice on a project.

Students provide their own fabric, trimming and/or buttons required, with the tutor’s help and guidance.   Any materials used in the workshop are added up towards the end of the course and paid for.

Fee:  £495 (plus materials + storage fee if applicable)
