Description
This is a 10 week course on Wednesday evenings 6:30pm til 9pm. All levels are welcome.  For this course, everyone brings their own project to work on.  Many students say that coming to an upholstery class is a welcome escape from their daily routine – so hopefully this will be something for you to enjoy while you learn how to do your project.
If you are a new comer, you’ll need an appropriate ‘starter’ project such as a dining chair, piano stool, footstool or a drop in seat or two, or a small nursing chair – or a chair with a maximun of 2 flat planes – a seat and a back. Curved backs (tub chairs) are more complicated and will take longer to do and to achieve a good result if you are new to upholstery. The course is designed to give you lots of tips and techniques used in the trade and to enhance your understanding of this huge craft.
As you progress, the tutor will guide you with choosing subsequent projects. Class size is usually a maximum of 5 students so there is lots of 1:1 instruction and demonstration as well as some group learning for different topics.
To avoid disappointment, please ensure you have the right project for this course by emailing a photo of your project to saramac@upholsterybureau.com and do check out the FAQs page for guidelines and advice.
**Please note, that as of this term, there is an additional storage fee to cover the cost of a storage room. Armchairs (including some nursing chairs) will be charged £65 per term and extra large chairs (depth and width are over 73cm) £120 per term. Most students will find that the new storage room means they can independently and safely retrieve their project and return it to the same place at the end of the session. This fee is paid at your first session, by card.** If you are unsure if you will be charged a storage fee, please do ask the tutor.
The classes include:
- Complete or partial ripping out and reupholstery
- Or only removing the top fabric and recovering
- Traditional & modern upholstery techniques, tools and materials and how we handle them
- Guidance to help you choose and find an appropriate fabric for your project
- Simple wood cleaning and reviving techniques and small project repairs
- Choosing upholstery fabrics and trimmings, making piping and double piping
- Other topics for discussion are chair or fabric designers, developments in sustainability/aspects of the upholstery trade
- Email me a photo of your project prior to the course at saramac@upholsterybureau.com and check out the FAQs page for guidance and advice.  Please email me if you think you need advice on a project.
Students provide their own fabric, trimming and/or buttons required, with the tutor’s help and guidance.  Any materials used in the workshop are added up towards the end of the course and paid for.
Fee: £465 + materials + storage fee (see note above)
