Something for the summer time, this is a 5 evening short course on Tuesday Evenings 6:30pm til 9:30pm so if you are completely new to upholstery, this class caters particularly for you! We’ll cover as many of the basic skills as we can cram-in while you work on a project that you bring to the first session. All levels are welcome, but this is an ideal opportunity for people wanting to try a taster class to see if upholstry is something for you.
As a beginner, you should bring a small project such as a dining chair, loose seats, a footstool or a small nursing chair. But everyone sends a photo of their project to the tutor and she’ll confirm it’s doable and suitable for you.
You receive lots of 1 to 1 instruction and group learning of various topics covering the tools and materials we used, including using the pneumatic staple gun. If you decide to continue to a 10 week course in the future, the tutor will guide you with choosing subsequent projects.
Everyone sends a photo of their proposed project to me before the course starts to ensure it is doable and achievable.

**Please note our Storage Fees for some projects: Armchairs including tub chairs, loungers, wingbacks, ottomans, large footstools and some nursing chairs will be charged £65 per term or £32.50 for half a term for storage.  Extra large chairs (depth and width are both over 73cm) are charged £120 per term. This fee is paid at your first session, by card.** If you are unsure if you will be charged a storage fee, please ask the tutor.
Depending on the projects, the classes may include:
- instruction for complete or partial ripping out and reupholstery
- Traditional & modern upholstery techniques applied to domestic furniture
- learning the different tools and materials and how we handle them
- Simple wood cleaning and reviving techniques and small project repair
- Ripping out and collecting information: using various tools to rip out
- Indentifying the parts of the chair or project
- Measuring and cutting and proper handling of materials such as webbings & sheet waddings
- Using foam or rubberised hair; other fillings
- Attaching calico to shape your piece to the correct tension and proportions
- making Y and T cuts
- making single and double pleats
Students provide their own project, fabric, trimming and/or buttons required, with the tutor’s help and guidance.  Any materials used in the workshop are added up towards the end of the course and paid for in the last session.
