Description
This is a 10 week course on Monday evenings 6:30pm til 9pm. All levels are welcome. For this course, everyone brings their own project to work on. Many students say that coming to an upholstery class is a welcome escape from their daily routine – so hopefully this will be something for you to enjoy while you learn how to do your project.
The best advice, if you are a new comer, is to bring a project such as a dining chair, loose seats, footstool, or small nursing chair to your first class. These are appropriate first projects while you learn some basic skills. The course is designed to give you lots of tips and techniques used in the trade and to enhance your understanding of this huge craft.
As you progress, the tutor will guide you with choosing subsequent projects.
There is lots of 1:1 instruction and demonstration as well as some group learning for different topics. Our teaching assistant, Andrea, attends this class as well, so someone is always on hand to help you.
To avoid disappointment, please ensure you have the right project for this course by emailing a photo of your project to saramac@upholsterybureau.com and do check out the FAQs page for guidelines and advice.
**Please note, fees include storage for all beginner size projects. Armchairs (including some nursing chairs) will be charged £65 per term and extra large chairs (depth and width are both over 73cm) £120 per term. This fee is paid at your first session, by card.** If you are unsure if you will be charged a storage fee, please ask the tutor.
The classes include:
- instruction for complete or partial ripping out and reupholstery
- Or carrying out a recover (only removing and then replacing the top fabric)
- Traditional & modern upholstery techniques applied to domestic furniture, tools and materials and how we handle them
- Guidance to help you choose and find an appropriate fabric for your project
- Simple wood cleaning and reviving techniques and small project repairs

- Other topics for discussion are chair or fabric designers, developments in sustainability/aspects of the upholstery trade
- Email me a photo of your project prior to the course at saramac@upholsterybureau.com and check out the FAQs page for guidance and advice. Please email me if you think you need advice on a project.
